The Underdog: Huawei Ascend P6 Review

There are numerous Android phone makers in the market today—Samsung, HTC, LG, and Sony to name a few. While these brands have dominated in most parts of the world, this does not stop the Chinese company Huawei from entering the arena. Its weapon? The Huawei Ascend P6, of course! Now, we take a closer look at this exciting offering, and decide if it gives its more prominent competitors something to worry about.

Exterior Design
Just like its competitors, the Ascend P6 shows a sleek and modern design with its black and metallic look. Also, you would love the fact that this smartphone is the slimmest that you would see in the market. Yes, you read right; the Ascend P6 holds the crown for being the slimmest of its kind. With 6.2 mm thickness, it is 3.1 mm slimmer than the thinnest (well, used to be) HTC One. With the thin body measurement, light weight automatically comes with it as Ascend P6 weighs only 120 grams.

Display and Screen
As per the display, the Ascend P6 has a 4.7 inch with 720p which is a lower figure compared to the typical 1080p of other brands. However, it has its own ways to compensate for the low screen resolution. Ascend P6 lets you adjust the settings of color temperature—you can go for a cooler or warmer display. And speaking of cooler temperature, are you worried if you will have a hard time using the touch screen during the winter time? Well, worry no more as you will be able to fully use its screen even if you have your gloves on—perfect for users in cold-climate countries.

Camera and Picture Quality
You will be amazed at the camera aspects of Huawei Ascend P6. To start off, it has a 5 megapixel front camera—outstanding as other smartphones only have 2 or 3 megapixels. For those who love taking pictures of their selves, this would be a suitable phone for you as it has facial-enhancement software, improved self-portrait photos, and a default 2-second countdown timer.

For the rear one, it has an average 8 megapixel camera—but don’t expect regular-looking camera shots from Ascend P6. There is another thing about it that will make you go “Wow!” with this phone. Taking close shots is incomparable if you are using Ascend P6 as its camera has 4cm macro shots. It can also take great landscape photos. A considerable f/2.0 aperture will give you outstanding field effects without compromising the details of background and foreground subjects. Can you imagine the quality of your Instagram pictures using the Ascend P6?

Connection Capabilities
Huawei Ascend P6 scores above-average when talking about connectivity. You get a default Wi-Fi connection, Bluetooth, GPS, and HSPA+ that gives 21 MB/sec download and 5.76 MB/sec upload. It also has Wi-Fi hotspot utility which allows you to connect your laptop to the internet when your Ascend P6 runs on mobile data. DLNA Connectivity is also available for this phone. You can use it for wireless media streaming such us connecting to smart TV, console, or set-top box.

However, Ascend P6 does not support 4G connection and NFC which is really a downer as these are the latest must-have connectivity feature for smartphones.

Power Longevity
Even if Huawei Ascend P6 has a 720p HD display, it can still run for long hours as it is backed up by a massive 2000 mAh battery. Yes, despite its small and thin size, it still managed to put in a relatively good-performing battery to support its operations. Comparing it with other smartphones, it faired on the top list on power longevity.

And with a competitive price tag of $480, the Huawei Ascend P6 is definitely something to watch out for.
